Using X-keys In-Game

X-keys programmable keypads, such as our example XK-24, can be programmed with in-game actions and macros. X-keys can be used as part of a multiboxing setup to drastically increase the control the player has of their party in any MMO that allows multiboxing.

What is Multiboxing?

Multiboxing is a style of play in MMO games where a single player controls multiple characters. Many players find it to be a challenging and rewarding experience.

Games that allow multiboxing include, but are not limited to:

  • Dungeons and Dragons Online
  • EVE Online
  • EverQuest II
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Rift
  • Warhammer Online
  • World of Warcraft

Phyre

I have used X-keys for many years for gaming. At present the game of choice is WoW, and X-keys makes it so much easier. I program my X-keys to cast all my various spells/skills/macros and have them in a very nice, close, and easy to use space. With X-keys my hand is right there and all the keys are easy to get to without having to move my hand, or look up and down to verify I am hitting the right keys. I can set up many key combos that would be difficult to do with just a normal keyboard, and I can also type macros directly into my X-keys and not have to waste valuable in game hot keys. X-keys makes it much easier and way faster to play with many more options.

Example XK-24

XK-24 labeled for use with World of Warcraft

The XK-24 works well in both landscape and portrait orientation, so the first thing to consider when I was designing my XK-24 layout was which way to go. I ended up deciding on a landscape layout that consists essentially of a numberspad for combat, and an 8-button section for other macros and functions.

I make use of our Key Blockers (find them in our Accessories section) to further customize the XK-24's layout and make it easier to locate each section without looking.

I also make use of the red and blue dual backlighting to light each section differently.

My layout is intended to control one, or more, low-level Night Elf Hunters in World of Warcraft. The same concept can be applied to any level and any class or race.
